Spotlight On...Marni

The wild and witty vision of creative director Francesco Risso is, quite simply, a lot of fun

When Francesco Risso took the reins as creative director of Marni, it was a surprise to many in the fashion industry. Though he had worked for major Italian brands in Milan, including eight years under Miuccia Prada, Risso, 36 was a relative unknown. But his uniquely surreal sensibility has made him a worthy successor to the brand’s founder Consuelo Castiglioni whose elegant and intellectual brand of eccentricity made the label a go-to for creative types.

Nowhere is this sensibility more evident than Risso’s Instagram feed, provocatively named @asliceofbambi. He has little of the typical designer content—new ad campaigns, collections and selfies in enviable locales. Risso uses his as a diary of his visual obsessions—an enigmatic world that is delightfully bizarre, sometimes unsettling and also unexpectedly beautiful.

And while there may not be a direct line, you can certainly see high-level echoes of what Risso sends down his runway. For Fall 2019, his menswear collection mixed his signature exaggerated tailoring with a riot of psychedelic motifs and prints, some created in collaboration with Italian animator Bruno Bozzetto, all expertly layered. The show notes referred to it as “A metamorphic exploration of the new youth through three-dimensionality.” The perfect finishing touch: the new sock-style Banana Sneakers with a curving, molded sole inspired by a Pop Art banana.

Of course, Risso’s wild and witty vision doesn’t need to be worn head to toe. In fact, it’s perfectly designed for remixing. We recommend layering a geometric motif camp shirt under a denim jacket, pairing expressive printed pants with a sporty windbreaker or just wearing those Pop-themed Banana sneakers with your weekend hoodie and jeans.
